Add Five Degrees to Manage Heat Load

Particularly in the warmer months of the year, the heat inside of the house can reach triple digits, especially if no one is home to turn on the air conditioner. When the temperature grows this high, it is nearly impossible to reduce it down to a reasonable level quickly enough for you to cool off. Air conditioning a house this quickly places an immense amount of stress on the central air system. It has to work twice as hard, expend additional energy with extended run time and experience excessive wear and grind.

Instead, we recommend leaving the air conditioner on while you are out and setting the thermostat about five degrees warmer than where you would like it if you were home. This helps control the heat load inside of the home so that when you do need the air conditioner, unnecessary stress is removed and cool air occurs more promptly. Though it may seem counter intuitive to leave the air conditioner running when no one is home, in the end, it saves you time and money while helping your central air system last longer.

Have Your Windows Sealed

The cracks and crevices from windows and doors may seem slight but are oftentimes the culprit of uneven air temperature. Hot and cold air from outside can easily enter the home and sweep in allergens as well. Properly sealing windows helps eliminate variables that alter the indoor air quality and temperature.

Simple DIY solutions include plugging gaps and crevices with foam, caulking or rubber strips. You can also employ draft snakes for a more temporary arrangement. Draft snakes are long cylindrical pillows used to block out air by placing them along the bottom of doors or windows.

Weather stripping and sealing windows and doors ultimately aids in lowering energy expenditure when using the central air system and keeps the air inside of your home cleaner.

Insulate the Attic

To the same effect of sealing windows, insulating the attic is one of the best ways to create a more comfortable home atmosphere.

The attic is a dirty space packed with airborne pathogens and particles. For certain homes, the air ducts of the central air system are kept in the attic. Even if your ducts are held someplace else, the temperature of the attic plays a huge role in the overall temperature of the home.

This is because the attic climate can easily reach up to 130 degrees, most of which is heat absorbed from outside, especially during the summer.

When the air conditioner operates and cooled air runs through the ducts, the surrounding dirty, hot air of the attic reacts with the cooled air. Leaks and holes in the ductwork introduce dirty air into the clean air supply, contaminating and heating it. The central air system has to work longer and harder to condition the same air over and over again.

Attic insulation helps control the heat load in the attic space. With the blown-in fiberglass method, up to 12 inches of fiberglass is spread over the attic deck. Heat that enters the attic is absorbed into the fiberglass before it can contaminate anything else.

A second method to attic insulation is the radiant-barrier insulation. Your preferred HVAC technicians panel the underside of the roof with aluminum sheets. This prevents heat from ever penetrating the attic space, eliminating the external heat source.

Make Good Use of Ceiling Fans

Ceilings fans are often overlooked when the option for central air conditioning is available. However, ceiling fans are surprisingly economical and efficient when used correctly.

Ceiling fans come with two settings. One is set for summertime and spins the blades counterclockwise. This movement causes the blades to blow air directly downward and into the center of the room. The counterclockwise movement creates a breezy feel by stirring up the air. To get the most amount of cool breeze with the summer option, set the fan on high power.

The second setting is for the wintertime and spins the blades clockwise. The movement of the blades is designed to mix two bodies of stratified air by sucking in cold air from the bottom center and pushing warmer air from the top layer down to the sides. Use the winter setting for warm air at the lowest speed available for the greatest effect.

Always clean your fans of dust before using them and ensure that the blades are positioned at an angle greater than 12 degrees. By using your ceiling fans in this manner, you can cut down on the amount of time your central air system runs and the energy it uses to condition your home, thereby reducing your utility bill.

So you’re getting ready to choose a new HVAC unit! As you surely know, this is a big decision. Keep in mind that bigger doesn’t mean better when it comes to your HVAC unit, so don’t let the biggest unit on the market draw you in.

You home won’t necessarily cool quicker or use less energy just because you have a large unit. In fact, a unit that’s too large could potentially do more harm than good. When determining what HVAC unit is right for you and your home, you might want to try some heating and cooling load calculations.

What Is HVAC Load?

HVAC “load” is the amount of heating or cooling that a building needs in order to maintain a proper temperature. The load is affected by a lot of things, including the climate, insulation grade, square footage, sun exposure, number of windows and doors in the home, how many people live in the space, and more.

Heating and cooling load calculations determine both the size and scope necessary for an air conditioning unit. Contractors will go to great lengths to calculate the accurate load, including details like the type of home, the kitchen, air type, and more. Adding up all the information helps determine what kind of power is needed to keep the home cool.

Why Is Calculating HVAC Load Important?

Finding the right size unit for your home isn’t about getting the biggest size, or alternatively, spending the least amount of money. Incorrect heating and cooling load calculations will lead to an incorrectly sized HVAC unit which will lead to headaches down the road.  

A wrong size unit can result in poor air quality, high energy bills, and a unit that breaks down well before its time. For an oversized unit, it will end up having a shorter lifespan since it will have to turn off and on more often. For an undersized unit, it will have a shorter lifespan since it has to work much harder than it was made to work.

Both an oversized and undersized unit will affect your air quality. An oversized unit will result in a clamminess to your air quality since it will cool the space too quickly to have time to reduce the humidity. An undersized unit won’t be able to process the air as it should.

How is HVAC Load Calculated?

Heating and cooling load calculations are determined by measuring the efficiency needed in tons and BTU’s (British Thermal Unit). These measurements are a way for contractors to determine a general estimate.

If you’ve been looking into HVAC units, then you may be familiar with a “three-ton air conditioning unit” or some other size. This doesn’t mean the unit weighs three tons, but rather this is the unit’s cooling and heating capacity.

Traditionally, BTU’s are used to measure heat, and tons are calculated as BTU’s per hour. The more tons or BTU’s a unit can handle, the more powerful it is. Follow these steps to calculate your HVAC load to get the right measurements for your unit.

Step 1: Measure Your Square Footage.

Determine your home’s square footage. You can do this by looking at your home’s blueprints, or, if you don’t have those available, measure the space room by room. Measure the length and width of each room, then multiply those numbers to get a rough square footage. Alternatively, you can measure your home’s exterior and then subtract any spaces that won’t need to be heated or cooled, such as the garage. 

Keep an account of the height of your rooms. Ceilings that are taller than average tend to require more BTU’s to cool and heat.

Step 2: Add Up Insulation, Windows, and Other Factors.

Check what grade of insulation was used in building your home (if you’re unsure, U.S. Standard Insulation is a good guess). You’ll also need to track how many windows you have, your home’s air-tightness, sun exposure, heat-producing appliances, and so on. A good way to estimate these is by adding up BTU’s like the following:

  • Each home resident: 100 BTU’s
  • Each window: 1,000 BTU’s
  • Each exterior door: 1,000 BTU’s

Step 3: Add Everything Up!

This is what the heating and cooling load calculation would look like for a house with 2,500 square feet, 12 windows, 3 exterior doors, with 5 people living in it:

  • 2,500 x 25 = 62,500 (this is your base BTU)
  • 3 people x 100 = 300
  • 10 windows x 1,000 = 10,000
  • 4 exterior doors x 1,000 = 4,000
  • 62,500 + 300 + 10,000 + 4,000 = 76,800 BTU

However, if the coil develops cracks or small holes, the refrigerant could leak and you’ll be looking at an expensive commercial HVAC repair.

Regular maintenance can save you the trouble. When dust and grime builds up on the coils, they can corrode. This can lead to the coils developing cracks or holes which leak refrigerant. If the coils are not regularly cleaned, contaminants can build up and damage these delicate parts. Commercial HVAC repair techs know the right way to clean them during maintenance checks.

Water leaks

An AC unit functions by drawing water out of the air via the evaporator coil. During normal operation, condensate runs down the coil and drain line and is collected in a drain pan. It shouldn’t leak or cause visible moisture. If you see water collecting on the floor near your unit, commercial HVAC repair may be needed to fix the problem.

Water leaks from an HVAC unit may happen for several reasons. As water runs down the coils, it may collect dust and bring grime with it into the drain pan. If the drain line or pan becomes dirty and clogged, water won’t be able to drain properly and can overflow. If your unit is in the basement of your building, you may also have a condensate pump to pump the collected water out, which is another part that can malfunction.

Water leaks can also be caused by improper installation. Normal vibrations in a commercial building can be enough to disconnect a poorly-installed drain line, causing the condensate to spill. You can end up with structural damage to your floors, walls, and ceilings along with an expensive repair bill.

A regular maintenance inspection can prevent your need for commercial HVAC repair for this problem. An HVAC tech will clean the drain lines and pan, check for any leaks, and check the condensate pump.

Frozen coils

A frozen evaporator coil can cause a lot of damage, including compressor failure and water damage in your space. If you notice frost or ice on your indoor air conditioning unit, that’s a problem that’s going to require a visit from a commercial HVAC repair company.

Coils can freeze when a motor breaks down or runs too slowly, when the system develops a refrigerant leak, or due to air flow problems. Maintenance keeps motors and coils in good working order, as we mentioned previously. Also, regular maintenance tasks include cleaning air filters and fans, and fixing broken fan blades, which prevent air flow problems that can lead to frozen coils.

Control problems

If your HVAC system isn’t reaching the set temperature, the problem may actually be with your thermostat. If it can’t take an accurate reading, it may be sending the wrong signals to your HVAC system.
